I ran across an article on black holes this week; For Mature Black Holes, Time Stands Still. I have had a minor interest in them for years. By their mere name they imply some sort of dangerous mystery. They intrigue us and they challenge our sense of time and space. The title of the article gives us some sort of absoluteness. There is no hesitation in the title – it is a stated fact – for mature black holes, time stands still. You must read the article to learn more.
Some quotes from the article…
- a black hole’s evolution may be a mind-bending kind of space-time independent of time.
- A new study proposes a method
- Though observations suggest black holes are prevalent in the universe, scientists still don’t really understand what goes on inside them.
- The equations of general relativity usually used to understand the physics of the universe break down in these cases.
- "It is really beyond the physics we know," said Juan Antonio Valiente Kroon, a mathematician at Queen Mary, University of London. "To understand what happens inside a black hole, we need to invent new physics."
The article then goes on to explain that a new calculation seems to bring some clarity to the situation… “The Kerr solution is one of the few explicitly known solutions to general relativity that have a direct physical meaning."
Wow, did you realize that an article can start with such an absolute title but then reveal that they scientists don’t really know as much as they think. They are making proposals and theories and postulations. They are in the process of learning. Things become evident to them over time, through years of research and data gathering.
But in today’s reading - Job 38 – 40:5, we finally hear God speak to Job about the situation. God’s speech to Job is wonderful. It contains some insight into today’s topic of space and time and black holes…
Job 38:4 – 7 NLT
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
5 Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?
6 What supports its foundations,
and who laid its cornerstone
7 as the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
There is even a hint of sarcasm in God’s response:
Job 38:19 – 21 NLT
19 “Where does light come from,
and where does darkness go?
20 Can you take each to its home?
Do you know how to get there?
21 But of course you know all this!
For you were born before it was all created,
and you are so very experienced!
God really touches on today’s topic…
Job 38:31 – 32 NLT
31 “Can you direct the movement of the stars—
binding the cluster of the Pleiades
or loosening the cords of Orion?
32 Can you direct the sequence of the seasons
or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?
33 Do you know the laws of the universe?
Can you use them to regulate the earth?
As much as man in our arrogance would like to think that we understand the universe, the stars, the galaxies, the solar system, the earth, molecules, atoms, ions etc. our knowledge palls in comparison to the Lord’s knowledge.
The Lord knows his creation!
